The Matrix requires more than a temporary suspension of disbelief; it asks you to take leave of your senses from the moment you sit down. It amazes me that a studio can justify releasing a picture like this with anything but profit margin in mind. Yet non-commercial, non-genetically modified human spiritualism is the central message of the film.

Shameless product placement (look out for the new Nokia advert starring - yes, surprise, surprise - Keanu Reeves) poor casting and some completely contradictory 'high concepts' make the film outstanding. Perhaps there is a cold intelligence in the mercenary conception of the film. If so, I have a sinister feeling that the Matrix is the studio itself. reach into your pocket and log on to the future; the parallel unreality.

The film is a sci-fi vehicle for Keanu Reeves to look cool in a wooden sort of a way.

Now, if you are only into special effect and action sequences that defy all laws of gravity, then disregard everything I am about to say. On the other hand, if you are interested in an good all around film, keep looking. This film wishes it was half as good as the extremely underrated Dark City. This film wishes it were deep, hence all of the not too subtle reference to Alice in Wonderland. This film wishes it had clever writers who did not come off as stealing every mediocre idea from much better sci-fi flicks. Finally, and most of all) this film wishes that Keanu Reeves could act his way out of a paper bag. Unfortunately, none of these wishes came true and The Matrix is a third-rate sci-fi film with extra-ordinary special effects. It just goes to show that style can not substitute for substance.
